Lakeshores and Riverbanks Management   <\/span>\n
\n
\u201cLakeshore\u201d means the land not more\nthan 100 metres adjacent to or bordering a lake.\n \n\u201cRiver bank\u201d means the rising ground,\nnot more than 100 metres long, bordering, or adjacent to the natural course of a\nriver in the form of rock, mud gravel or sand and in cases of flood plains\nincludes the point where the water surface touches the land, that land not\nbeing the bed of the river.

The National Environment Management\nAuthority (NEMA) in collaboration with the relevant lead agencies protects\nriverbanks and lakeshores from human activities likely to adversely affect the\nrivers, lakes, and the living organisms therein; protect naturally occurring\nislands existing in rivers or lakes from human activities likely to affect the\nrivers or the lakes; and protect natural beaches of rivers and lakes and ensure\ntheir conservation for the benefit of the people of Uganda.

A person who engages in activities\nlikely to degrade riverbanks and lakeshores commits an offence and is liable,\non conviction, to a fine not exceeding thirty thousand currency points or\nimprisonment not exceeding twelve years or both. However, without limiting the general\neffect of this section, NEMA may, in consultation with the relevant lead agency\nand subject to the National Environment Act Cap 181, permit sustainable uses of\nthe protected zones which do not adversely affect the river, lake or natural\nbeach.
