The workshop brought together environment officers from major cities, government agencies, and academia to advance evidence-based air quality governance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Tackling a Global Challenge<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Poor air quality remains a pressing global issue, contributing to over <b>7 million premature deaths annually<\/b>. In response, NEMA launched the <b>National Environment (Air Quality Standards) Regulations, 2024<\/b>, a landmark step toward enforcing air quality standards nationwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Implementation Across Key Sectors<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Uganda has already begun rolling out measures across multiple sectors:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Transport:<\/b> Mandatory vehicle emission inspections by the Ministry of Works and Transport.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Industry:<\/b> Installation of electrostatic precipitators in factories.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Trade:<\/b> Enforcement of environmental levies and restrictions on vehicles older than 15 years by URA.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Monitoring:<\/b> Deployment of air quality monitors across the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Additionally, Uganda is embracing innovation through the <b>e-mobility strategy launched in 2023<\/b>, prioritising electric mobility. This includes promoting locally manufactured electric vehicles and motorcycles, alongside charging infrastructure rollout by <b>Kiira Motors Ltd<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">These combined efforts underscore Uganda\u2019s commitment to improving public health, reducing pollution, and advancing sustainable development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Day 2: Strengthening Data-Driven Decision Making on Air Quality<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Organised by AirQo in collaboration with NEMA, the second day of the workshop focused on bridging perception, baseline data, and policy action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Public Perception Insights<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Dr. <b>Melina Platas (NYU Abu Dhabi)<\/b> shared striking findings on public perception of air quality in Uganda:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>80%<\/b> prefer to receive air quality information via text messages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>40%<\/b> are willing to report polluters to authorities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">A majority support stronger measures such as fining polluters, removing old cars from roads, and abolishing open waste burning.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Baseline Data from AirQo<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>70%<\/b> of respondents use charcoal stoves daily.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>25%<\/b> burn waste at least once a year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>15%<\/b> drive a car or motorcycle.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Key Recommendations<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Participants explored how to translate these insights into measurable outcomes, with proposals including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Expanding communication channels for reporting air pollution.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Translating air quality information into formats accessible to local communities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Setting minimum air quality standards and enforcing hefty fines on offenders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Allocating resources for enforcement and monitoring.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Improving agency coordination and mainstreaming air quality issues into policy, planning, and budgeting.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The workshop highlighted the importance of aligning <b>public perception, baseline data, and policy action<\/b> to achieve meaningful progress.
