Elgon Project<\/b>, gaining firsthand insights into its progress and impact across the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The project is being implemented in <b>38 sub-counties<\/b> across Bududa, Bukwo, Bulambuli, Kapchorwa, Kween, Manafwa, Mbale, Namisindwa, and Sironko districts. Its core objective is to <b>conserve ecosystems that provide critical goods and services for rural livelihoods and food security<\/b> in the Mt. Elgon landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Key Achievements of the Mt. Elgon Project<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The project has made significant progress in promoting sustainable practices and restoring degraded ecosystems:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Promoted <b>Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA)<\/b> and <b>Sustainable Land Management (SLM)<\/b>, including on-farm diversification to strengthen food crop value chains.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Increased adoption of sustainable coffee and staple crop production practices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Expanded integrated agroforestry and community conservation enterprises.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Raised <b>430,000 assorted tree seedlings<\/b> and <b>100,000 bamboo plants<\/b>. Of these, <b>220,000 tree seedlings<\/b> and <b>12,000 bamboo plants<\/b> have been distributed to partners for restoration of degraded forests, wetlands, and riverbanks.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Bushika Integrated Area Cooperative Enterprise<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Support from the Mt. Elgon Project has transformed Bushika Cooperative:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Membership growth:<\/b> From <b>1,889 coffee farmers<\/b> (586 women, 1,303 men) to <b>2,215 farmers<\/b> (731 women, 1,484 men).<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Acreage expansion:<\/b> From <b>1,889 acres<\/b> to <b>2,215 acres<\/b> under coffee production.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Improved practices:<\/b> Strengthened quality control and record-keeping under sustainable coffee production standards.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Empowering Women and Communities<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The inspection team \u2014 comprising NEMA board members, staff, and project representatives were warmly welcomed by <b>Kalaa Mugosi Women Empowerment Ltd<\/b>, a coffee cooperative in Sironko District.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Before project support, Kalaa Mugosi had <b>1,006 farmers<\/b> from 35 groups.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">With Mt. Elgon Project funding, the cooperative now supports <b>3,000 farmers<\/b> across Sironko and Bulambuli districts, with a vision to reach <b>15,000 farmers<\/b> by the project\u2019s end.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Their jubilant reception, filled with dance and celebration, reflected the community\u2019s appreciation for the project\u2019s transformative impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Looking Ahead<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The <b>Mt. Elgon Project<\/b>, funded by the <b>United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)<\/b> through the <b>Global Environment Facility (GEF)<\/b>, is advancing an <b>Integrated and Sustainable Landscape Management Approach<\/b> for conservation of the Mt.
