{"id":27618,"date":"2025-11-27T08:17:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T05:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nema.go.ug\/en\/?p=27618"},"modified":"2026-03-17T10:39:25","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T07:39:25","slug":"building-capacity-for-sustainable-use-of-genetic-resources-in-uganda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nema.go.ug\/en\/building-capacity-for-sustainable-use-of-genetic-resources-in-uganda\/","title":{"rendered":"Building Capacity for Sustainable Use of Genetic Resources in Uganda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The <b>National Environment Management Authority (NEMA)<\/b>, in partnership with the <b>National Council for Science and Technology<\/b>, recently conducted a training for environment officials from <b>7 districts in the Karamoja Sub-Region<\/b> on <b>Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit Sharing (ABS).<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">This initiative aimed to strengthen understanding of both national and international frameworks governing genetic resources, with a focus on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Protecting genetic information<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Ensuring fair and equitable benefit sharing<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Supporting research, medical innovation, and genetic-based products<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Participants gained practical knowledge on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Prior Informed Consent<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Mutually Agreed Terms<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Material Transfer Agreements<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Patenting of genetic materials<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Fees &amp; permits for genetic material transfer and many more\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The districts include; Moroto, Napak, Amudat, Nakapiripirit, Kaabong, Abim and Kotido.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Uganda implements the ABS framework under the <b>Nagoya Protocol<\/b>, with NEMA as the lead authority.
