The initiative is funded by the International Growth Centre, with support from the London School of Economics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><b>What the Project Will Achieve<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Over the next year, the project will:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Strengthen household and community-level waste collection and segregation<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Promote proper sorting of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Support safe transportation through licensed waste handlers<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Create opportunities for recycling and composting to boost local livelihoods<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Deploy community scouts to drive behaviour change and improve coordination<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">A neighbouring area, Kiwanga, will serve as a control site to measure project impact.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Local authorities have welcomed the initiative, noting recurring challenges such as street littering, drainage blockage, and low community participation. The project aims to build a culture of responsible waste handling, supporting long-term urban planning and a cleaner, healthier environment.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Once proven successful, the pilot will be scaled across Mukono Municipality and eventually to other urban centres nationwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><b>Did You Know?<\/b><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Section 97(1) of the National Environment Act, Cap. 181 prohibits littering. Individuals responsible for homes, commercial premises, or vehicles must ensure waste is not disposed of in public places or waterways.
