Arua Golf Course was full of colour on 27th September 2025, as Uganda joined the rest of the world to mark World Tourism Day under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.” The national celebrations, hosted in Arua City, highlighted the growing importance of environmental protection in driving sustainable tourism and community development.

The event attracted government officials, cultural leaders, international guests, schools, and local communities; all united by a shared commitment to preserve Uganda’s natural and cultural heritage. Prayers led by religious leaders set a reflective tone, reminding Ugandans of their duty to care for creation and to protect the country’s rich biodiversity.

One of the major highlights of the day was the Environmental Exhibition, where government agencies, innovators, and private organisations showcased initiatives linking tourism and environmental conservation. The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) made a strong impression with an interactive exhibition that drew hundreds of visitors.

NEMA’s stall featured educational materials on environmental laws, proper waste management, and the protection of ecosystems in tourism areas such as River Nile, Ajai Wildlife Reserve, and Got-Nebbi Hills. Visitors engaged in discussions about the importance of clean, green, and well-managed natural sites as the foundation for a thriving tourism sector.

Speaking at the event, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, the Prime Minister of Uganda who represented H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, emphasized that economic transformation must go hand in hand with environmental conservation. “Our natural heritage is Uganda’s greatest tourism asset. We must protect it through responsible development, restoration, and sustainable use,” she said.

The Prime Minister commended the agencies present for their leadership in promoting environmental awareness and guiding local governments on compliance and restoration efforts.

Ahead of the celebrations, Arua City conducted tree planting and clean-up campaigns, reinforcing the message that tourism thrives where the environment is protected.

Through participating in this event, NEMA reaffirmed its national role in promoting sustainable development and environmental stewardship. The Authority continues to encourage all Ugandans to take an active role in protecting nature, because a clean and healthy environment is the foundation of a vibrant tourism industry.
