𝗞𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗹𝗮 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟱, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱: In a meeting with waste handlers in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, NEMA’s Executive Director Barirega Akankwasah, PhD advised the waste handlers to invest in waste value addition to generate income and commended entities which are already investing in private landfills.
The law permits an entity to dispose of waste only within the specific jurisdiction outlined in their license, unless they obtain consent and a license from the authority in a different jurisdiction. As a result, waste handlers must comply with these regulations.
At the meeting, KCCA also reported on plans of decommissioning Kiteezi landfill, and managing leachate discharge into environment.
According to Section 162 of the NEA Cap 181, a person who illegally manages waste commits an offence and is liable, on conviction, to a fine not exceeding fifty thousand currency points (Ugx300,000,000) or imprisonment not exceeding fifteen years or both.
