NEMA Advances Green Development and Circular Economy in Namave Industrial Park

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), through its Compliance Assistance Unit, convened stakeholders from government ministries, departments, agencies, and the private sector operating within Kampala Industrial and Business Park, Namave. The engagement focused on promoting initiatives that support green development, circular economy principles, and pollution-free production.

This dialogue aimed to enhance stakeholder understanding of relevant environmental policies, legal frameworks, and cleaner production strategies. Participants expressed a strong desire for NEMA to adopt a more collaborative approach—shifting from enforcement to partnership—by providing targeted compliance support to help industries meet environmental standards. They also called for increased stakeholder involvement in the implementation of greening strategies and emphasized the need for consistency and clarity in environmental regulations.

Kampala Industrial and Business Park currently hosts 457 allocated factories, with over 200 operational, 164 under development, and 70 in the pre-start phase. While this rapid industrial growth presents significant economic opportunities, it also brings pressing environmental challenges, including wastewater management, flooding, and pollution control.

Effectively addressing these issues requires sustained collaboration between NEMA, industrial park entities, and other stakeholders to advance sustainable production practices and foster a resilient, environmentally responsible industrial ecosystem.
