KAMPALA, Thursday, 3^rd April – In a ceremony filled with pomp and glamour, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) on Thursday inaugurated its 9th Board of Directors at the NEMA House in Kampala, ushering in a new era of environmental governance in Uganda.

The swearing-in event, presided over by the Minister of Water and Environment, marked the official commencement of the three-year tenure for the newly appointed Board following Cabinet approval. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking government officials, environmentalists, and stakeholders from various sectors.

State Minister for Water and Environment, Hon. Beatrice Anywar who representedthe Water and Environment Minister Hon. Sam Cheptoris, commended the outgoing Board for its dedicated service, noting that the new team would build on their achievements to strengthen environmental policies, promote sustainable development, and ensure compliance with environmental laws.

The newly inaugurated Board members took an oath of office, pledging to uphold Uganda’s environmental laws in the execution of their duties. They will undergo an induction program to familiarize themselves with NEMA’s policies, governance structures, and the state of environmental management in the country.

The 9th NEMA Board comprises:

• Dr. Callist Tindimugaya – Member
• Hon. Eng. Katwiremu Yorokamu Bategana – Member
• Hajjat Aphwa Kawaase Sebyala – Member
• Mr. Can Amos Lapenga – Member
• Mr. Chemonges Jimmy Kuka – Member
• Ms. Sarah Kagingo – Member
• Mr. Nasur Lokeris Modester – Member
• Dr. Barirega Akankwasah – Board Secretary

Dr. Barirega Akankwasah, the Executive Director of NEMA, welcomed the new Board, expressing confidence in their ability to steer Uganda’s environmental agenda forward. He reiterated NEMA’s commitment to working closely with the Board to ensure sustainable environmental management and compliance with the National Environment Act.

The Board of Directors, the highest policy decision-making body within NEMA, is responsible for providing strategic direction and overseeing the Authority’s management. As Uganda faces increasing environmental challenges, the newly sworn-in Board carries the responsibility of ensuring that conservation and sustainability remain at the core of national development.

NEMA extended its appreciation to the outgoing Board for their invaluable contributions and pledged continued efforts to safeguard Uganda’s environment for future generations.
