Today, 5th February 2026, Makerere University received interim approval to establish the Environment and Social Sustainability Centre. The Centre is envisioned to serve as a strategic platform to strengthen national and regional capacity in Environment & Social sustainability.
The Centre which is very pivotal to National Environment Management Authority Uganda‘s mandate is envisioned to serve as a strategic platform to strengthen national and regional capacity in Environment & Social sustainability. The Environmental Social Sustainability Centre at Makerere University funded by the World Bank will provide structured training and continuous professional development though short courses, applied and policy-relevant research, and impactful consultancies.
By convening academia, policymakers, regulators, civil society, practitioners and the private sector, the Centre will function as a shared national and regional resource for best practices, innovation, and learning in Environment & Social sustainability.
