Makuutu Rare Earth Project in Bugiri, Mayuge and Bugweri Districts

MAKUUTU RARE EARTH ELEMENTS ESIA REPORT DISCLOSURE

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) invites the General Public to review and scrutinise the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) Report for the proposed Makuutu Rare Earth Elements (REE) Project.

The Makuutu Rare Earth Elements (REE) Project is a 27 year proposed mining project for extraction of rare earth elements from a 40 km long near surface ionic adsorption clay ore-body covering the districts of Mayuge, Bugweri and Bugiri. 

The major components of the project include mining activities, a processing plant and supporting infrastructure – such as the mining offices, warehouses, the laboratory, fuel storage facilities, and ablution blocks among others.

Details of the nature of the project, its location, anticipated negative and positive impacts; and proposed mitigation measures have been provided in the ESIA Report. 

An electronic copy of the ESIA Report can be accesses on the NEMA website; while printed copies of the ESIA report are available at the offices the National Environment Management Authority, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, the Bugiri District Headquarters, the Mayuge District  Headquarters, and the of Bugweri District Headquarters.
