The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) leads Uganda’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), the country’s guiding framework for conserving biodiversity and ensuring its sustainable use. The project aligns Uganda’s priorities with global commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Objectives
• Conserve Uganda’s rich biodiversity and ecosystems.
• Promote sustainable use of natural resources for inclusive development.
• Ensure fair and equitable sharing of benefits from genetic resources.
• Integrate biodiversity into national policies, planning, and economic activities.
Key Focus Areas
• Protection and restoration of forests, wetlands, and wildlife habitats
.• Addressing threats from invasive species and pollution.
• Strengthening climate change adaptation through biodiversity.
• Promoting community participation, with emphasis on youth, women, and indigenous groups.
• Managing biotechnology and reducing human-wildlife conflicts.
Current Phase
Uganda is implementing NBSAP III (2025–2030) under the theme: “Sustainable use of biodiversity for inclusive wealth creation.” This builds on earlier strategies, placing stronger emphasis on climate resilience, innovative financing, and community-driven conservation.
The NBSAP Project at NEMA is a cornerstone of Uganda’s environmental stewardship, ensuring that biodiversity remains a foundation for sustainable development and future prosperity.
