The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), in partnership with the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), India, has unveiled a Solid Waste Information Management System (SWIMS), a centralised digital platform designed to streamline waste data collection and management across Uganda.

The system, developed by CSE working closely with the Division of Environmental Inspection, Monitoring and Audit and officially handed over to NEMA, will serve as a national repository for solid waste information. It will enable evidence-based planning, monitoring, and enforcement of waste management policies, while supporting Uganda’s transition towards sustainable urban development.

Implementation of SWIMS will be carried out in collaboration with stakeholders from local governments and urban authorities nationwide. This initiative marks a significant step in strengthening Uganda’s environmental governance and ensuring that waste management decisions are guided by accurate, timely, and comprehensive data.

“The launch of SWIMS represents a milestone in Uganda’s journey towards efficient waste management. By centralising data, we are empowering institutions and communities to take informed action for a cleaner, healthier environment,” said Mr. Victor Nahabwe, Commissioner Environment Enforcement and Field Operation, NEMA during the handover ceremony.
