NEMA Celebrates 30 Years of Environmental Stewardship In Uganda

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) marked three decades of service with a milestone celebration at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel on Wednesday evening, March 25, 2026. The event brought together government officials and environmental stakeholders to reflect on 30 years of regulating and monitoring Uganda’s natural heritage since NEMA’s inception in 1995.

Dr. Barirega Akankwasah, Executive Director, NEMA: Dr. Akankwasah expressed pride in the authority’s growth, noting that staffing has increased from 100 to 500 in just four years to enhance frontline operations.

He added that the anniversary is a moment of “pride, reflection, and renewed responsibility” for the country and its natural systems.

Prof. James Okot Okumu (NEMA Board Chair): Reaffirmed NEMA’s commitment to protecting ecosystems without fear or favour.

Dr. Alfred Okot Okidi, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water and Environment: Representing the Minister of Water and Environment, Dr. Okidi emphasised that government alone cannot achieve large-scale restoration, citing a need for “strong partnerships” with the private sector, civil society, and local governments.

Hon. Peter Ogwang, State Minister for Sports (Guest of Honour): Delivering a message on behalf of the Prime Minister, Hon. Ogwang applauded the 1995 establishment of NEMA as a “timely and transformative” decision, affirming the government’s dedication to empowering the agency with technology for enhanced enforcement.

The celebration featured reflections on NEMA’s journey, recognition of partners, and renewed pledges to strengthen environmental governance for the next generation.
