KAMPALA, Saturday 28th February 2026 – The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has launched a new pilot initiative aimed at strengthening sustainable urban development and enhancing climate resilience in Uganda.
The project, Domestic Solid Waste Management Strategies for Sustainable Urban Growth and Climate Resilience in Uganda, will be implemented in Upper Nabuti Village, an area already demonstrating effective waste handling systems. The initiative is funded by the International Growth Centre, with support from the London School of Economics.
What the Project Will Achieve
Over the next year, the project will:
A neighbouring area, Kiwanga, will serve as a control site to measure project impact. Local authorities have welcomed the initiative, noting recurring challenges such as street littering, drainage blockage, and low community participation. The project aims to build a culture of responsible waste handling, supporting long-term urban planning and a cleaner, healthier environment. Once proven successful, the pilot will be scaled across Mukono Municipality and eventually to other urban centres nationwide.
