NEMA in collaboration with Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) based in New Dheli, India is conducting a 3-day capacity building of environment officers, auditors from across Uganda to enable implementation of CSE’s Solid Waste Information Management System (SWIMS) for local governments in Uganda to solid Waste Management.
However, emphasis has been made towards extended producer responsibility, sorting at source, however a shift from landfill-centric approach to setting up of holistic waste management system and keeping landfills an a last resort is seen as step towards effective solid waste handling.
During the opening remarks, Indian High Commissioner to Uganda H.E. Upenda Signh Rawat thanked NEMA and CSE for this collaboration and iterated that 70% of solid waste is mismanaged in most countries sub-saharan countries through open dumping leading to environmental degradation and missed opportunities.
Standing in for NEMA Executive Director, Mr. Victor Nahabwe – Senior Manager, Department of Environment Enforcement and Field Operations at National Environment Management Authority communicated that the training is the first part of partnership and more Ugandan officers will receive the training on how to use the new Solid Waste Information Waste Management System.
