Technical working group meeting for the preparation of the 7th National Report (7NR) for Uganda to the Convention on Biodiversity

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), through with a dedicated Technical Working Group, is actively preparing Uganda’s 7th National Report (7NR) on biodiversity conservation for submission to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Key Thematic Areas of the 7NR include:

  1. Biodiversity
  2. Biosafety and Biotechnology
  3. Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS)
  4. Mainstreaming Biodiversity
  5. Awareness and Capacity Building

The Technical Working Group comprises a diverse range of stakeholders, including representatives from government Ministries, Departments and Agencies, academic institutions, the Buganda Kingdom, the Wildlife Conservation Society, indigenous communities, and other key partners.

    

Penninah Z., ED of United Organization for Batwa Development in Uganda, representing Indigenous People and Local Communities, presented a report of the Technical Working Group on Access to Genetic Resources Benefit Sharing for the preparation of the 7th National Report to CBD.

This report is being developed under the framework of the National Biodiversity Strategic Action Plan (NBSAP), aligned with the Cartagena protocol on Biosafety and Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit Sharing in Uganda (ABS). The initiative is supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF-8) through UN Environment Programme.

The final report will reflect Uganda’s progress and commitments in biodiversity conservation and is expected to be submitted to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
