On Saturday, July 25, 2026, Uganda marked the launch of the inaugural National Cleaning Days, a monthly nationwide exercise aimed at promoting sanitation, public health, and environmental stewardship. The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) proudly joined communities across the country in this historic initiative.

A Day for Every Ugandan

National Cleaning Day is more than just a government programme, it is a call to action for every citizen. From households to schools, markets to places of worship, Ugandans came together to sweep, collect waste, unclog drainage channels, and restore public spaces.

• Vice President Jessica Alupo encouraged citizens to embrace cleanliness as a daily habit, noting that “If each of us plays our part, Uganda will be clean, healthy, and prosperous.”

• Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja reminded the nation that “A Clean Uganda is Everybody’s Responsibility,” stressing that sanitation is key to reducing preventable diseases.

• NEMA Executive Director Dr. Barirega Akankwasah emphasised that “A clean environment is the first hospital, the first classroom, and the first investment in our economy.”

Why It Matters

• Poor sanitation contributes to 75% of Uganda’s disease burden, including malaria, cholera, and typhoid.
• Every month, Ugandans will dedicate 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM on the last Saturday to cleaning their communities.
• Movement restrictions during these hours ensure maximum participation, with only emergency services exempted.

Building a Culture of Cleanliness

The initiative is designed to become a national culture, not just a one‑day event. It complements Uganda’s environmental restoration gains, including increases in forest cover (12.7%) and wetland cover (13.9%).
