NEMA and Stakeholders Inspect Gold Mines in Busia

A delegation from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, and the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, led by NEMA’s Executive Director Dr. Barirega Akankwasah, conducted a familiarisation inspection of Wagagai Mining (U) Limited in Busia District. The visit comes ahead of a training program for Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining Groups (ASMGs) on sustainable mining practices.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

Dr. Akankwasah reaffirmed Government of Uganda’s commitment to sustainable development, stressing that while mining is vital for economic growth, it must balance profit, people, and planet. He emphasized:

  • Effective waste and chemical management
  • Addressing social issues such as community resettlement and compensation
  • Ensuring mining activities uphold environmental and social safeguards

Training for Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners

The inspection was followed by training sessions for over 100 participants, including artisans, small-scale mining groups, and large mining companies. Topics covered included:

  • Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) process and certificate fees
  • Labour laws and worker safety regulations
  • Environmental impacts of mining and pollution control measures

Miners welcomed the educational and dialogue-based approach, noting it was more effective than past enforcement methods.

Expert Insights

  • Ms. Hajara Nakiberu, Senior Environment Inspector (Mining, NEMA), explained the health hazards of mercury use in gold mining and introduced safer alternatives.
  • Mr. Kwiringira Stephen, Programme Technical Officer (Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development), highlighted worker safety concerns, including risks of spinal disorders, accidents, and fatalities.
  • Ms. Amina Kiiza Bakulimya, Inspector of Mines (Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development), guided miners on different types of mining licences.

Promoting Mercury-Free Mining

During the field visit, Dr. Akankwasa praised KACOBA Co. Ltd in Agaata village, Buteba sub-county, for adopting mercury-free mining practices. He urged miners to:

  • Protect ecological functions of the environment
  • Avoid discharging wastewater into rivers
  • Properly manage abandoned pits
  • Seek NEMA compliance services to enhance sustainability

Conclusion

The inspection and training in Busia mark a significant step towards responsible mining practices in Uganda. By combining oversight, education, and collaboration, NEMA and its partners are ensuring that mining contributes to economic growth while safeguarding communities and the environment.
