Uganda Celebrates World Environment Day 2026

World Environment Day has become the largest international platform for environmental awareness, observed in more than 150 countries. It is a moment to reflect on progress, renew commitments, and take practical steps to safeguard our planet for present and future generations.

This year’s global theme is “A Global Call for Climate Action.”

Uganda commemorates the day under the national theme: “Climate Action Begins with You: Act Now.”

Uganda’s National Celebration

Adjumani District, in the West Nile region, is the host of the 2026 national celebration. Although the official date has been postponed, activities are already underway across the district and the country.

Key initiatives include:

  • Tree planting to restore degraded ecosystems.
  • Community mobilisation and awareness campaigns.
  • Engagements with schools and youth to inspire future environmental stewards.

Why West Nile Matters

West Nile is home to Uganda’s largest refugee population, with Adjumani District hosting over 200,000 refugees. This places immense pressure on forests, wetlands, and water sources.

  • Over 70% of households rely on biomass (firewood and charcoal) for energy, driving deforestation.
  • Shifts in rainfall patterns and prolonged droughts are affecting agriculture, the backbone of local livelihoods.

West Nile symbolizes the urgency of climate action—it must begin now, and it must begin with each of us.

Government Action on Climate and Environment

During a press conference at NEMA house, NEMA Executive Director, Dr. Barirega Akankwasah communicated that Uganda is implementing strong frameworks to restore ecosystems and adapt to climate change:

  • Ten-Year Plan of Action (2021–2031) for environmental restoration.
  • National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAPIII).
  • National Development Plan IV and Vision 2040.

Progress so far:

  • Forest cover increased from 10% in 2015 to 13% today, with a target of 24% by 2040.
  • Wetland cover improved to 9.3% in 2026, up from 8.9% in 2021.
  • Uganda’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) commits to a 24.7% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
  • Restoration of at least 30% of degraded ecosystems by 2030.

Innovation in Green Mobility

Uganda is embracing electric mobility, led by Kiira Motors Corporation.

  • Electric buses (Kayoola EV) and solar commuter vehicles are being piloted in Kampala and Entebbe.
  • Expansion of public charging networks is underway.
  • These innovations will reduce emissions in the transport sector.

Activities Across Uganda

Although the physical event was postponed due to Ministry of Health’s directives, as part of World Environment Day 2026, ongoing activities include:

  • Tree planting: Over 100,000 seedlings are being planted in Adjumani schools and communities.
  • Media campaigns: Radio and TV programs highlight climate change impacts and mobilise public participation.
  • School engagements: Debates, music, drama, essays, and art competitions inspire youth to become environmental champions.
  • Online dialogues: Interviews and discussions amplify the national theme and encourage citizen action.

Upcoming physical celebrations will feature:

  • Exhibitions showcasing sustainability innovations.
  • A national dialogue on climate action.
  • School competitions and cultural performances.

Uganda’s message is clear: Climate Action Begins with You. Act Now.
